10 Easy Tips to Help You Organize Your Garage - 8/2/2010

Most people admit their garage is on of the most cluttered and messiest spaces in their homes, and their cars are relegated to the driveway. With these 10 easy tips you will be well on your way to an organized garage.

  1. Plan ahead - Start by picking a day, when you will be able to spend enough time. Gather everything you will need like cleaning supplies, storage containers, and shelving. One thing that is often overlooked is disposal. Many garbage collection companies will drop off an extra garbage can for a minimum charge, if you have a large amount to dispose of, this may be a god idea.

  2. Start early - This will ensure you have plenty of time to complete your project. It will also help if you forgot something in your planning process, as you may need to make a trip to the store.

  3. Pick a staging area - It is a good idea to have a large area where you can sort through your stuff. Usually it is easiest to use the driveway in front of your garage. You will use this area for moving things out of the garage so you can work.

  4. Sort everything - Start by taking things out of your garage, and placing them in your staging area. You will want to sort everything as you take it out. Make areas for kids toys, auto repair, cleaning supplies, or whatever you may keep in your garage. This will make it much easier when it goes time to put it back in the garage.

  5. Throw away broken or useless item - Don't be afraid to throw away items that are broken, or have no use.

  6. Create a garage sale or donation pile - When you come across items you no longer need, but are still in good condition, you can have a garage sale or make a donation to a worthwhile charity.

  7. Prepare the floor - Sweep and wash the floor. It is also a good time to put down any flooring products this will really help the garage feel finished.

  8. Create the organization space - This is the time you will want to hang any Bike Racks or Organization items, as well as any garage cabinets.

  9. Prepare the walls - This is the time to hang any shelves, or wall organization devices. When you are hanging the shelves, keep in mind you will want to store toxic chemicals and dangerous tools out of reach of small chldren.

  10.  Decorate and Enjoy - Make your garage feel complete by adding your own personal touches like clocks, neon signs, or pictures.

Remember once the garage is clean and organized, put things back where you got them, and once a week do a quick clean. This will keep your garage looking great for years to come, and you will no longer have to fear a messy unorganized garage.
